Urban American Outdoors is on the Move!

Urban America Outdoors (UAO) is on the move. UAO  has just won two regional cable broadcast awards is sponsoring the first heart of the city Hunter Ed Class and is promoting Missouri Urban Deer Season

Kansas City, Missouri, Oct. 8, 2006 –
Urban American Outdoors (UAO) is a television program created by avid outdoorsman Wayne Hubbard and Candice Price  and is based out of Kansas City. It is a reality sports adventure show  that airs locally as well as nationally. UAO has mass cross over appeal  reaching the traditional outdoors market and the underserved communities. The show not only shares the enjoyment of being outdoors, it also educates and tells the importance of conservation and preserving the heritage of hunting, and fishing from a different perspective.

Urban American Outdoors recently was awarded the 2006    MIDI Award for Community Programming. UAO was presented the first and second place for excellence in programming at the 49th Annual Meeting of the Mid America Cable Telecommunications   Association on September 6, 2006 in Metropolitan Kansas City.

The Mid- America Cable Show sponsors it’s MIDI Awards yearly to showcase and honor excellence in Cable programming, advertising and marketing. Urban American Outdoors airs on Time Warner Cable Metro Sports weekly. This year Oh! Oxygen co-sponsored the awards and UAO shows “South Pacific” came in 1st place and “Urban Fishing Derby” came in 2nd place. National Cable Networks were in attendance and represented along with the members of the regional six states.

This Saturday, September 30, 2006 UAO will be having the first Hunter Ed class given in the heart of the city and it’s sponsored by NSSF and Kansas City Parks and Rec. The class will be providing information and training on the fundamentals of outdoors and hunter safety. Once a person participates in this class they will receive their lifelong Hunter Certification giving them the ability to embark on the great heritage of hunting. The class is free and lunch will be provided. This will be just in time, because next weekend, Oct. 6th thru the 9th will be the Urban Counties portion of anterless deer season.

This deer season is open in specific counties due to the over population of deer. When there is an over abundance it causes disease amongst the deer, more vehicular accidents and eating of crops and vegetation. UAO is filming a show on the importance of the Urban Season and conservation featuring our Lawmakers who love the outdoors. We are also promoting the Share the Harvest program which will cover the cost of all whole deer donated during the urban counties portions of the deer season. This is a great way to give back to the communities by feeding the hungry and show the positive side of hunting and conservation. The host Wayne Hubbard said “For the cost of an anterless permit and your time a person can feed over 100 people. Venison is lean, low fat, healthy and delicious and this can make a big difference in a person’s life”. Urban America Outdoors Youth Club

Kansas City, Missouri, Oct. 31, 2006 –
Urban America Outdoors Youth Club Growing up in the outdoors and sports arena, whether it’s playing basketball, swimming, track & field ,hunting or fishing, it all involved mentors, parents or teachers being a support mechanism in order to fulfill these goals. Today, more than ever, these kids need our help, support and guidance in their life to help them reach adulthood and become successful in whatever they chose.

There was a time when we had lots of neighborhood and community support, but sadly things have change. We all use to look out for one another, but now many of our family neighborhoods have all but disappeared and been replaced with some negative images we don’t want our kids see. This makes parents have to work harder to provide alternatives to balance off what their children may get exposed to. Many times this takes extra money, which is just not there these days, but there are some programs that are available for the kids that are free of charge. All you have to do is look for them.

We have received several emails and some phone calls about what we have available at Urban American Outdoors for children. We have UAO Kids developed from our Urban American Outdoors Youth Program which teaches children about their world around them and urban conservation form an urban perspective. Some of the programs we have included will be urban fishing derby’s, bicycling, outdoor entrepreneurship, entertainment and a lot of other outdoor fun activities.

To be a member of the club is free and all kids are invited to join. We will have something for all age groups. Soon we will have more info and membership forms available on our website and at designated businesses in the community, for our UAO Kids. These children are very important for the future of our community and we are happy to be able to work with our youth in the city. There have been many events and outdoor functions we have participated in or created involving kids. Our focus is to have more children from the city to be able to enjoy some of these positive, self esteem building outdoor activities. If you are interested in getting info about UAO Kids you can call us at 913-334-5177 or emails us at uaotv@hotmail.com

MIDI Award Given to Urban American Outdoors

Kansas City, Missouri, Oct. 31, 2006 –
Urban American Outdoors is a television program created by Wayne Hubbard and Candice Price and is based out of Kansas City. It is a reality sports adventure show that airs on Time Warner Metro Sports locally and on other Cable and Satellite Networks nationally. UAO has won over 20 nationally and internationally Broadcast Awards. Urban American Outdoors has mass crossover appeal reaching the traditional outdoors market as well the underserved and disadvantaged communities. The show not only shares the enjoyment of being outdoors,
it also educates and tells the importance of conservation and preserving the heritage of hunting and fishing from a different perspective.

Urban American Outdoors has been doing an urban outreach program for both youth and adults alike to share in the outdoor experience. Our results have all been successful in bringing someone new into a world they may have had misconceptions with, because of how it had been previously portrayed. Wayne Hubbard the host and avid outdoorsman has been mentoring for quite a while promoting outdoors, conservation and having fun with the family. Working with Urban American Outdoors can connect you to an audience that may have been unaware of the beauty of the outdoors that surrounds them.

Urban American Outdoors and the Kansas City Missouri Parks and Rec had
a successful urban fishing derby on July 29, 2006 which will become an annual event. It was held at the pond in Spring Valley Park located in the heart of the city. There were over 250 people in attendance made up of volunteers, city officials and most importantly the families. Fathers and Mothers were there, with their children in toll, some for the very first time to fish. This will be a lifetime memory for many of these families and that’s what we hope to continue making for all…great memories of having fun in their city park.

Urban American Outdoors is committed to continue our collaboration with Mark Bowland and Kansas City Missouri Parks and Rec and we will also be available to bring our fishing experience to the other National City Park Systems. One of the unique factors with our fishing derby’s is that we custom design them to fit the urban core. In addition we host, film and air the derby nationally. Our derbies energize the community by giving them an activity that their entire family can participate in and the opportunity to utilize the park in a positive manner. This creates a win win situation for all parties involved. We look forward to taking this partnership

Fox Interview

We recently were invited to interview the Twentieth Television, a unit of FOX stars, Geraldo Riviera and Judge Alex at the NATPE convention at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. We found both individuals to be very down to earth and very engaging. Twentieth Television currently has some of the hottest shows and stars on TV today. Such as “24” starring Keifer Sutherland and Boston Legal Starring William Shatner (Captain James Tiberius Kirk)

Judge Alex premiered Sept. 12, 2005 and has been renewed here in Kansas City for another year. Judge Alex is a Cuban immigrant and a Miami Native and he’s the only television Judge who has been a police officer, a lawyer and a judge. He let us know that he can’t wait to come to Kansas City and do a meet and greet with his fans. He also invited us to go and hand catch lobster with him this summer, after which we will have a huge dinner. We definitely intend on keeping that appointment. Next we had the pleasure of talking with Geraldo Rivera.

Geraldo was simply wonderful. He has been in the business for over 30 plus years.  He is a very passionate man, that when he brought up Katrina he became misty eyed and spoke on how it continues to affects him deeply. He was there watching it unfold and couldn’t believe his eyes of the degree of American people suffering. He said this should have never happened. He also spoke of race relation in America and how he thinks it is one of the major problems of our country still today. He prides himself in being in the trenches with the people getting the story first hand and not just a talking head reading the news. He currently has a new show that airs locally weeknights called Geraldo at Large.

Later on that day we ran into Tom Joyner. Tom said he loved Kansas City and will be coming back soon. He also wanted to thank the people here for listening to his radio show and watching his TV show. Tom said he loved Kansas City and will be here soon. Talking with Tom is like talking with family. We also ran into Fred Williamson who gave me a big hug and said Kansas City! He also talked about the old days when he did his movie “Buck Town” here and also reminisced his old stomping grounds in KC. He is currently working on a new TV show about capturing sexual predators titled “Sexual Predator Alert”. He said he was going to put the hammer on them. All in All we ran into some incredible people with some very compelling stories who we really enjoyed spending time with. You will find that people all over really have a fondness for Kansas City and for the people who reside here. They always send their love and always have a great story about the time they were here.

“Catch And Release vs. Catch and Eat ”

One question that has been asked quite frequently, of the staff of the Urban American Outdoors, is why do so many of the anglers on those fishing shows on television, catch those great looking fish and then just throw them back in the water?  People wonder what is wrong with these guys; they’re not keeping it real. We have been told by our audience that they can’t remember even one time when their grandma, daddy or momma would spend all day fishing and then throw a perfectly good fish back in the water. That fish is going to hit the frying pan and feed the family. Sometimes daddy would bring home extra fish for some of the people in the neighborhood, like Ms. Jackson and her kids across the street and cousin Day-Day across town, but never once did any fish get tossed back or wasted. It was always food; it’s as simple as that.

You will even see Wayne Hubbard catch his prize fish, and later on, in one of Urban American Outdoors cooking segments, he’ll prepare a delicious meal from his hard work of fishing off that boat all day. That’s what we call “Catch and Eat”, and it is so good and so satisfying. However, there is a very good reason why you see some anglers practicing catch and release.  In many cases, there is a limit on the number of fish you can catch in a day. After these guys get there limit of fish, not wanting to go over their legal limit, they release the rest.   So many times they don’t actually show the catch for that day, but they do want to educate the public on being good stewards and practicing conservationist, which they do.  Still others just enjoy the relaxation of angling and have no intention of having them for food.

The theory of Catch and Release as explained by Department of Conservation is:   “… by releasing the fish “immediately” after they are caught … contributes to fish populations, rather than depleting them.”  In other words by releasing those extra fish you help maintain a viable fishery for future generations.

UAO Pro Staff Diving in the South Pacific

Urban American Outdoors has several Pro Staff members located here in KC as well as around the country that participant in unique adventures in the outdoors such as diving in the South Pacific, Skiing in Colorado, Sailing in Caribbean or hunting and fishing in various locations throughout the states. One such person who has leaded a historical expedition in the Micronesia Islands was UAO Pro Staff member Dean Carroll.

Dean Carroll grew up in Harlem and has over 20 years of diving experience. He has won several awards and honors including being named Diver of the Year by The National Association of Black Scuba Divers and The Atlantic Rangers Club of Philadelphia. African Americans have been connected to the water and exploring from the beginning of time. There have also been black divers who did a lot of work in bridge building in United Stated. It has been documented that way before Christopher Columbus came to the New World; Africans had long been on the waterways all over the world and occupants of this country. Today we have black yatch clubs, black sailors, and of course black scuba divers like Dean. Dean Carroll assembled a team of black divers to set out for a diving expedition in he islands of Micronesia in the South Pacific. There were 16 African Americans who embarked on a nine day adventure of scuba diving the Ghost Fleet of Japanese Imperial Navy. Ther initial dive took place in Palau where they dived the Blue Corner and the Blue Hole. The Blue hole was a cave under water where the ceiling fell out. It took you to the Blue Corner which was the top of a mountain range which has a 1000 ft drop. In this special place you can witness such majestic fish like the10 to 15 ft foot sharks cruising along with many unclassified sea life unseen by most people.  A lot of us can remember the voyages of Jacque Cousteau who would show you underwater from a clinical view, well we will show you the place were few dare to go the only way we know how. This was the first time six African American women did a group dive to descend over 200 ft together on a WWII Japanese wreck. The unique thing about this experience this ship still had tanks mounted to the top of the ship were you can physically see and touch. This was a powerful move by these individuals who embarked on this historical adventure and we will be showing the actual first time seen on television this event. It is simply beautiful swimming under the sea in this other world on Earth. This is a great piece for the kids to see because they get a chance to see the real live Nemo.

One of the fascinating things about this is that they can train just about anybody who has the desire to learn how to make them a good diver. They have express that they have people from all walks of life, from the single mom from the city, blue collar workers to the professional group of doctors or lawyers. We at Urban America are always interested in exposing people to the possibilities of life and fostering alternative life role model is one of the ways in fostering this endeavor.

Cooking Urban Wild

After a successful day of hunting or fishing, we at Urban American Outdoors like to make delicious meals from the catch we harvest. Often times we donate our wild game to food pantries, other times we give it to friends or family who make request for the game, which they will prepare themselves. Every now and then, we get asked to cook a particular meal, just like we do on our cooking segments on our show. This request often comes from friends who had never had the experience of eating wild game. Once they have sampled our meals they are always pleasantly surprised with the succulent flavor and normally want seconds. They tell us things like – “I didn’t know it could taste so good” or “I had some before but it didn’t taste like this”. We tell them they can learn to cook wild or natural just like they cook any meats. The important thing about wild game is the initial preparation. It is vital to get your game or fish cleaned and chilled immediately. We also tell friends there is a plus to eating wild game, and that is the nutritional value of these low fat meats, for instance, elk and buffalo meats are the lowest in fat and cholesterol of any meat such as beef, pork or poultry and most fish. Now because some of the wild game doesn’t have a lot of fat, these meats must be cooked slowly and it will always helps to marinate the game ahead of time. There is a large variety of great tasting natural meats to choose from that people have enjoyed eating for years. Some people have a preference of the big game such as deer, elk, boar, or buffalo. Other folks may prefer the small game, which would be rabbit, squirrel or coon and so on. A lot of these meats are used in gourmet type meals, with gourmet prices if you were to go to some of the very upscale restaurants. Normally in these types of restaurants they will serve a farmed or penned raised version of game opposed to the wild.  Any of these meats can be fried, baked, broiled, and grilled just like any other meat and accompanied with all the sides that you want. Cooking is fun and it brings people and families together. Coming out soon will be our new soulful wild game cook book. This book will help make all this easy, and give you the how to, for those who want to partake in cooking an alternative hot down home meal. We have some great Urban American Outdoor recipes that we can’t wait to share with you. We also will be having some wild game dinner fund raising events with proceeds being donated to worthy causes that families can participate in. We want to encourage you to try some of these meals which are very healthy and delicious and if you have questions email us at uaotv@hotmail.com. …and don’t forget to cook it Urban American Style!

Wild Boar Hunt

It’s about 5:30 in the evening and we’ve just finished eating our dinner. It’s now time for us – the camera guy, guide and I – to roll out.   All morning we had been hunting on this private hunting preserve for this Black Russian Boar with no luck at all.   I knew if we didn’t get the boar in the early morning, before dawn, we would have to come out again this evening.  Boar hunting is typically done at night, because that’s when Boars normally roam around.  Every now and then you can get lucky with an early morning hunt, but today wasn’t one of those days.

So, after dinner, we got in our jeep and drove about three miles out to the site were we had been hunting earlier.   This is a place where Boars were seen on several occasions wallowing in the mud nearby.    Now that we’re back, there is nothing to do but wait for the sun to go down and the night to roll-in.   It’s has been a couple of hours and were just sitting quietly waiting for this wild animal; I just hope he decides to visit his favorite spot tonight.   I’ve been waiting to go wild boar hunting for sometime now and when I received a call from a preserve owner about the wild boars on his land.   He said they were tearing up the ground all over the preserve, and attacking the other animals.  A wild boar can be quite dangerous and will charge and attack a person if the opportunity arises.

All of a sudden, I see him; he is about 120 yards out, running as fast as he can.  I have been waiting for this moment all day, so I took my shots. Despite the fact that I know I hit him, he kept running. This is where hunting gets a little difficult, because you have to track the animal to see if he’s down.  You don’t want a mad wounded wild animal – in this case the boar - running around.   That’s not a good thing.   Whatever you take down you need to find it, so we start tracking.   Fortunately, there was a bright full moon to provide all the light we needed.   This helped a lot as we followed the path I believe the boar ran.  Instinct coupled with experience kicks in, and I am on him, and in a matter of minutes I spot my boar lying over by some brush. We cautiously walk over to him, but as we approach we can see that the hunt is over.

I can tell you this one thing though; you wouldn’t want this animal coming after you in the dark under a full moon.  He weighed about 600 plus pounds, had two inch upper and lower tusk, and was cold black in color.   To me, he looked a lot like the werewolf in the movie “Wolfen”. This Boar was definitely nothing to play with.

The excitement of Wild Boar hunting is an incredible experience that every hunter should try at least once. We at Urban American Outdoors always have a good time in our outdoor endeavors but, in the meantime, we’re headed home; everybody’s tired and happy, and most importantly, we had a safe successful hunt. Now we are planning on having a huge barbeque.
